Characteristics of Living Things

There are 8 different characterstics of living things.

1. Living things should be made up of units called cells.

2. Living things should reproduce either sexually or asexually. Asexually is when a single parent        reproduces its self. Sexually is 2 cells from different parents uniting to create offspring.

3. Living things have a genetic code, DNA or RNA. DNA is double stranded or "double helix". RNA    is single standed.

4. Living things should grow and develop.

5. Living things maintain a stable internal environment, known as homeostasis. Homeostasis          is when organisms keep internal conditions, such as temperature and water content, fairly          consistent.

6. Living things should obtain and use materials and energy. Metabolism is the combination of        chemical reactions through which an organism builds up or breaks down materials as it carries    out its life processes.

7. Living things respond to their environments. A stimulus is a signal to which an organism            responds to.

8. Taken as a group, living things change over time (evolution).
